Yemeni farmer fled a war-torn zone to present to the world this exquisite coffee selection
The founder, Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Yemeni who grew up in San Francisco Bay, is a legend in his own right. After having his first taste of delicious single origin coffees, his passion for specialty coffee grew. He had to resort to taking out a loan in order to obtain a Q grader license and subsequently returned to Yemen to begin his coffee production plan. He visited over 30 coffee plantations in Yemen, and even had to trek up to 3 days for certain inaccessible areas. Mokhtar's dream is to work with the farmers to improve the quality of coffee produced and the income of coffee farmers. He hopes to work with farmers and educate them on the different aspects of coffee production including the use of organic fertilizers, harvesting fully ripened cherries, and the post-processing and drying of coffee. He is even willing to provide some small farmers with micro-loans to rescue the small farmers from the poverty cycle of endless borrowing due to their desperate need for money. Those farmers who followed his standards received an income that is higher than average by 35%. In March of 2015, Mokhtar was prepared to show the world the fruit of his labor. His suitcases were packed to the brim with coffee samples from various small farmers and brought to Specialty Coffee Association's ("SCA") annual meeting for coffee appreciation by industry experts.
